Lokoja Community, Catholic Church Urge Kogi Government to Tackle Ongoing Erosion Challenge

Holy Family Catholic Church, Lokoja Community Seek Urgent Government Intervention Over Worsening Erosion Menace

Members of the Holy Family Catholic Church, Marian Hill, Lokoja, alongside residents of the neighboring community behind the Essential Drugs Office in Zone 8, have issued a heartfelt plea to the Kogi State Government for urgent intervention to address the persistent erosion challenges plaguing the area.

The community, which suffers severely during the rainy season, has called on Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo to prioritize the construction of accessible roads and durable bridges across the overflowing river that continually contributes to the erosion crisis. According to the residents, each heavy downpour renders roads impassable, cutting them off from their homes and places of worship.

Appealing through the Commissioner for Environment, the community urged the state government to devise a lasting solution to the yearly erosion that disrupts their daily lives and threatens their properties.

Speaking to Kogi Trends Media, Reverend Father Augustine Okafor of Holy Family Catholic Church disclosed that while the Church and residents had implemented temporary control measures in the past, the situation has now deteriorated beyond their capacity to manage.

“The community has done its best over the years, using local methods to mitigate the erosion. But it has become more severe and we can no longer contain it without government support,” he said.

The residents are hopeful that the current administration will heed their call and implement sustainable infrastructural solutions that will bring relief and restore normalcy to the affected areas.
